America is great because she is good
Most have heard the quote "America is great because she is good", but most are not familiar with the whole quote which is:
In the end, the state of the Union comes down to the character of the people. I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there. In the fertile fields and boundless prairies, and it was not there. In her rich mines and her vast world commerce, and it was not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits, aflame with righteousness, did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.
The quote is generally attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville although some now dispute this. Whoever said it was exactly right. However, the key is the sentence before the famous quote.
"Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits, aflame with righteousness, did I understand the secret of her genius and power. "
America is losing her greatness today because she is losing her goodness and she is losing her goodness because the pulpits are not aflame with righteousness. Pastors today do not preach righteousness because to preach righteousness you have to preach on God's laws. They don't preach God's laws because Christians have been led astray to believe that God's laws don't apply to us. The New Testament writings about being "free from the law" and "saved by grace" have been stretched and misused until Christians believe that they can live anyway that they want and God is still enthusiastically pleased with them and that they have a guaranteed seat in heaven. In other words, as the New Testament also says grace is being used as a license to sin! Therefore pastors are not preaching righteousness and America is losing her goodness and greatness. Not only that but because of America's unrighteousness God is removing His hand of protection from this country. Unless America repents God will not only remove His hand of protection He will also bring his hand of righteousness judgement and wrath against America just as He has done against Israel every time that she has strayed from Him.
